Φωνή Αιγαίου - Εποχές των Ορυχείων στο Αιγαίο - Τhe Voice of the Aegean - Mining the Aegean

On Tuesday 22 May at 19:30 and on Wednesday 23 May at 21:30 in cinema Utopia we will screen the documentaries THE VOICE OF THE AEGEAN by Lydia Karra (Greece, 2004, colour, 61 min) and  MINING IN THE AEGEAN by Nikos Ellinikakis (Greece, 2003, colour, 37 min).  The films are in the Greek original version with Εnglish subtitles.

THE VOICE OF THE AEGEAN

The Aegean we knew and loved, with its pristine beaches, barren landscapes and traditional villages perched on hilltops is disappearing fast. The rapid, anarchic building of recent years has trampled on the natural environment and is changing its distinctive character. The film, through the use of archival material, traces the historical and social roots of today's developments in the Aegean and refers to its recent history: the experience of wars, the painful emigration, and the rise of the shipping industry. The views of Archaeologists and Planners are interweaved with the debate among the islanders themselves, reflecting the complexity of the issues involved.  At another level, the film treats of the importance of nature in our lives and the value of beauty in the natural and manmade environment. Elytis' verse is a reminder of the primeval beauty of the Aegean. Fresh and creative ideas are suggested to achieve a more sustainable prosperity.

“Voice of the Aegean” won the best film on the natural environment award at the European Heritage Film Festival 2005. Karra has filmed a hymn to the Greek Aegean. Let us hear what the archipelago has to say to us, with Karra’s images accompanied by a score by Evanthia Reboutsika, with recitations by Lefteris Voyatzis and narration by Pemy Zouni.

MINING IN THE AEGEAN

In 2001 a team of architects and historians from the “National Technical University of Athens” made a record of the now deserted mines of the Aegean islands. These mines, that operated in the 19th and 20th centuries and supported the first steps of the now Greek state continuing the mining attempts of the ancient Greeks that were interrupted in the Middle Ages, today remain inactive, silent witnesses of an age that left its mark on the history of the populations and the islands of the Aegean. The documentary records the progress of the research in the dark galleries, seeks the memories of the people who lived and worked in them, depicting an age that was characterized by the vision of an ephemeral development, by hard human labor, by dreams and nightmares.

Nikos Ellinikakis studied Film in Athens and Modern Art in London. He created a series of documentaries and public service announcements for the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, the National Bank Historic Archive, the National Technical University of Athens, etc. In 2001 he worked with the National Research Foundation creating an audiovisual archive of oral testimony for the Industrial Museum of Ermoupolis in Syros. He has presented a series of video installations in London, Hannover, Ermoupolis and Athens.
